Laurie Kalli performs with a 22 string slide veena lap guitar, an Indian instrument similar to the Sitar and Hawaiian Lap steel. Laurie also plays the 39 string Ancient Indian Sarangi. The Hawaiian lap slide or a lap steel will be among her festival instruments.
Laurie tells a story of Hawaii‘s Tau Moe Family's performances and travels in India and how their Hawaiian lap steel guitar became so popular in India. She relates how Indian musicians used the Hawaiian steel guitar to create elaborate instruments.
A specialist in Indian music, her repertoire includes traditional classical Indian raga, folksongs, Kirtan accompaniment and stories. She had classical training in Indian and South Asian Music. In addition, she plays Hawaiian slack key, folk music and piano. She also teaches.
