Al Greene Jr. started playing the Hawaiian steel guitar at age 13 after hearing his father practicing the steel guitar. He began lessons with John Auna in Kona who took him to play in public programs throughout the state.
At one of his performance trips to O‘ahu, Al met Alan Akaka. At the request of Al's mom Momi Greene, Alan flew weekly to Kona to teach Al the steel guitar.
Alan taught Al the nuances of playing the 8-string steel guitar including how to hold the bar, vibrato and picking techniques. Beginning at age 17 Al got his first steady gigs.
He resumed playing the steel guitar a year and a half ago, after pausing at age 30 to spend time with his family. In this time he has acquired additional steel guitars and musical equipment.
Al plays regularly at the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa in Keauhou on Mondays and Thursdays, and at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel luau on Sundays and also experiments with different types of music with LT Smooth at Huggos on the Rocks.
